    When I was pitched the idea of a social studies show for preschoolers, I was excited to be a part of it. While social-emotional content is often the curricular backbone for the preschool audience, and when the learning is cognitive/academic, it is almost always literacy or math based. So to have the chance to create a show using the rich content of social studies was exciting.

  • Superbuns

    This was my first time working on a series based on a children’s book. The world Diane created in the book was so clear and specific and delicious, that the North Star for the show was clear from the beginning. Making characters that are both relatable and aspirational is tough. Superbuns, Rhonda, Kevin and Neville all rise to that occasion. And sound design! The right VO. The just right and just ridiculous vaudevillian SFX. Really make it sing.

    Truly unique quality of Tinkergarten vis-a-vi learning goalsis that the program truly teaches parents in equal measure with teaching kids. It’s baked into the formula. I had the chance to create curriculum as well as produce a ‘Tinkergarten at Home’ video series to support families when in-person classes weren’t possible.

  • Assembling a company of one-man banana bands in Morningside Park in Upper Manhattan

  • Providing real-life scenarios from a 1st grade classroom to inspire the character of Odd Todd

  • Translating upper school social studies themes into the world of preschool

  • Thinking of how many different words rhyme with subtraction

  • Talking to groups of kids about games they play and why snot is funny

Some of it is pretty on-the-nose, explicitly teaching addition and subtraction and silent e. But if you think about great kids content—Is it good storytelling with relatable characters who have fun dialogue? Is it visually compelling with creative sound and music? Chances are it’s teaching something! Educational media!
